Needles
We carry a range of needles for cross stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, beading and millinery. We also carry different brands because we know you all have preferences.
DEFINITIONS OF NEEDLES:
TAPESTRY needles have a large eye and blunt tip so the needle goes between threads, not thru them. The eye its large enough to accommodate tapestry wool or stranded embroidery floss. Used for needlepoint and cross stitch.
CHENILLE needles are the same length and same size eye but has a sharp tip. The sharp tip enables the needle to pierce the fabric.
EMBROIDERY needles have a smaller eye than tapestry and chenille but longer then SHARPS needles. They have a sharp tip and are the same proportions as SHARPS needles.
MILLINERS needles have a long body, sharp tip and the eye is round and the same size as the shaft so french knots can easily be done. They used to be used in hat making, but now are more used for decorative embroidery stitches and dimensional embroidery.
Needles choosing tip: The diameter of the needle should be similar to the diameter of the thread being used.
BOHIN
Bohin is a company with a long history and is based out of France. They began making needles in the 1860’s. Their specialty is their needles are strong and are as smooth as glass. We carry their tapestry needles in sizes from 20 – 28 and chenille needles in sizes from 20 – 24.
DMC
DMC started business with 3 partners in 1746 in France. In 1818, they discovered mercerization ( the process that makes cotton silky looking and more receptive to take dyes). They became DMC after WWII and have continued to be a leader in the stitching world .We carry their EMBROIDERY needles from Asst packs to size 5-10; TAPESTRY needles from 18-22 asst pack and 13, 16, 18, 20,22,24,26,28; CHENILLE needles 18-22 asst pack, 18, 20, 22, 24.
JOHN JAMES
John James is a British company based in Redditch, Worcestershire that began in 1840. The area is considered “the Needle Capital” of the world. In 1937, John James merged with Milward and Hall and added fish hooks to their products line. We carry their TAPESTRY needles from size 22 to 28, TAPESTRY PETITE from size 22 – 28, TAPESTRY TWEENS in sizes 23 and 25, and BEADING needles.
